CNN has been reporting that Focus On The Family is claiming anti-bullying efforts in the wake of recent suicides of tormented young gays are merely promoting “the homosexual agenda”. I’m sure that is being reported on other networks and via other media.
The problem is that for the sake of ratings and getting people worked up, CNN et al. will let such groups freely make their pronouncements, sometimes at length. The worst case of this is when they will stage debates across the screen and run them with a philosophy of “let’s let everyone air their viewpoints fairly”. That’s precisely what CNN is doing this weekend with this story and FOTF. They’ve done it countless times before on other issues. It’s as if the networks believe they’re performing a service by giving nutjobs equal footing with the more reasonable in our society. This applies to matters purely political, scientific and technical too.
To the networks I say STOP giving such hateful and ill-informed people a PR outlet. It’s incredibly irresponsible and definitely dangerous. Such groups as Focus on the Family and their ilk do not hold positions that merit the kind of TV debate I have described. Their views reaffirm the beliefs of those who would enact violence, ridicule and legislation against others, whether of minority or majority status. Fear and hate is promoted and these network appearances may be enough to bring about acts that cause suffering and death to others.
Replace the “homosexual agenda” with “the black agenda”, “the Asian agenda”, “the left-handed agenda” or “the midget agenda” and tell me, is that worthy material for air in any other context than an analysis of hate speech, bigotry and prejudice?
Since this is the Internet and Godwin’s Law applies, let’s bring Hitler into the discussion. By CNN’s example, it would seem likely that they and their brethren would in the 1930s, in some warped timescape, tease such stories like “The Jews. A race of vermin and the reason your family is suffering? One group thinks so and we’ll speak to them at length tonight!” Cue up a three box screen with our anchor, a member of the ADL and Adolf. Hopefully your reaction would be “WTF?” and that’s exactly what it should be today in 2010 to similar occurrences.
I’m a proponent of John Stuart Mill’s belief that the truth will eventually shine brighter than lies and falsehoods given time and that in the spirit of free speech we mustn’t censor people. But that accompanies a belief in responsibility in relation to one’s fellow man. The networks that give hate, prejudice and just pure insanity an equal spotlight as the truth are irresponsible and not serving anyone but themselves. Honestly, in support of the truth, I do occasionally enjoy some hater having their ass handed to them and their ignorance pointed out in a national forum but the technical context and weighting is important.
It needs to stop. Turn off any network that does you and the people you care about such a disservice.
My name is Kelly Schomburg, I’m the girl with the red hair in these pictures. I was protesting at the Occupy Wall Street march yesterday when I and several other women were sprayed with mace and subsequently arrested. Many have already seen the video, which has been spreading like wildfire over twitter, Facebook, tumblr, and other video feeds, along with hundreds of other photos and videos. This is my recount of what happened.
COLLECTIVE STATEMENT FROM #OCCUPYWALLST
“As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies. As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members. That our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors. That a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people, and the Earth, and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power.
We come to you at a time when corporations — which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality — run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here as is our right to let these facts be known.
They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give executives exorbitant bonuses.
They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in workplaces based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
They have profited off the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless animals, and actively hide these practices.
They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is, itself, a human right.
They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut worker’s health care and pay.
They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people with none of the culpability or responsibility.
They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams, but look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.
They have sold our privacy as a commodity.
They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.
They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products, endangering lives in pursuit of profit.
They determine economic policy despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.
They have donated large sums of money to politicians, who are responsible for regulating them.
They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.
They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives, or provide relief in order to protect investments that have
already turned a substantial profit.
They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.
They purposefully kept people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.
They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners, even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.
They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.
They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.
They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.
To the people of the world,
We, the New York City general assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.
Exercise your right to peaceably assemble, occupy public space, create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.
To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.
Join us and make your voices heard.”

A lack of skepticism and an abundance of false equivalency are the death knell for TV news. Remember when you got news and truth from TV news? Now they’re echo chambers regurgitating and perpetuating garbage and lies for the sake of ratings/corporate profits. As if that isn’t obvious…
The other night, while at work, I read a one line notice that there were protests on the Penn campus and optimistically thought “Oh, good. The student body is reacting with proper horror at what has been revealed to have happened in their midst.”
Then a paragraph long alert describing the actual situation came out. Then my stomach turned a bit. Oh, FFS, kids. Your focus is Joe Pa being fired?
I really want to think there is a larger portion of the student body that is beyond the stupid “Joe Pa is god” bullshit and realizes that nothing about football/sports excuses anyone of responsibility for ignoring/covering up child molestation and sexual assault.
“I just followed orders” or having done the minimum doesn’t cut it as a defense in this situation or absolve anyone who would claim to be a civilized person.

It’s like the Republican Party walks into a shit sandwich shop and spends like nine months looking at the menu board trying to find the shit sandwich with least amount of shit in it.
Spot on, ION. What also amazes me is the incredible effort of GOPers to self-hypnotize so they can feel good about their choice of the moment. They’re incredibly fickle too as they just search for solid reasons to like or dislike each one so they can stop thinking about how shitty the group is. It’s Newt one week, Ron Paul the next and then Romney. L,R,R.
Such a pathetic will to believe and gullibility is inherent in the party faithful so the candidates play on that with ever bigger lies and distortions. They know they can get away with incredible hypocrisy because the GOPers are SO desperate to want to fervently like them, hoping for easy answers and a chance to stop thinking.
“Please! Gives us someone to cheer for so we’re not stuck with the uppity black man again!”
Where else could one tout family values and get away with cheating on wives? The GOP. Where else could a man wearing magic underwear who loves corporate personhood gan such a perch? The GOP. Where else could an Ayn Rand devotee cloak his racism, homophobia and ignorance in a cloak of libertarianism pushing states rights? The GOP.
Iowa? You can keep ‘em all.
So, over at HuffPo the other night, I posted my analysis of Santorum in Iowa. My scatological ruminations were appreciated by fellow subversives and apparently a moderator.
“Hmmm. I’m worried that Santorum may be spread a little thin in the days ahead and I’m not sure he can really ply himself where he needs to. He really needs to mix it up with the locals and assess his future as a candidate. If he calls matters as he really sees them it may be be a stretch for voters. Then again, he may see some new openings and push forward forcefully with nothing to ease his path but the excitement his crew can foment for him. It’s not just a silly season, it’s a savage season.”
This is Moscow, Russia on February 4th, 2012. That date is today.
These are the people protesting the clearly rigged election, resulting in the victory of Vladimir Putin.
This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to see it here
They faced temperatures well below freezing and massed anyway.
Not even the elements will chill humanity’s hearth.
Holy shit!
