Did you ever notice that when someone cashes in a ticket to FOX-conservative-paranoid anti-liburral wacky town and commences a whole “things were better when” spiel about the size of da gubmint, they are never able to specifically cite a year when all things were wonderful and government was the perfect size and everyone in the country was happy and free and farted rainbows?
A friend on facebook posted an obnoxious flag-waving video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nEoW-P81-0 ) about the special election in Massachusetts. A couple other friends calmly objected to said video and a teabagger or two mocked those responses as though they were predictably provoked and that they themselves need not even bother responding or explaining. So I replied, likely futilely, thusly:
“But you haven’t explained anything at all heretofore, C____. You’ve merely mocked what others have stated rationally and calmly.
The video is a nauseating appeal to mindless patriotism and purports this election to somehow be equivalent to the import, bloodshed and horror of the Revolutionary War. That’s insulting.
Liberty arises from what rights we legally grant each other and to act in harmony with our founding fathers would be to vote for candidates who would not restrict the rights of others through law.
Anyone who would claim that the present administration is tyrannical is ignorant of American history and decidedly blind to what is happening elsewhere on the planet. President Obama has repeatedly sought compromise so the views of many people are brought to the fore but the people roused by the rhetoric of this ad would rather see other voices squashed and tossed aside ironically in the names of freedom and liberty.
A majority of Americans vote for the Democrats in the last election by the very process heralded in this video, so why would you want to have the will of the American people set aside? That, my friends, would be tyranny.”
But those words will just fall on deaf ears connected to closed minds who cling to their “God-given” rights and liberties. So sad that these people will not engage in reasonable debate, if they are even capable of it. It’s all “God”, ‘merica, liburty, tha flag and capital letters with them. No thinking, just feeling. UPDATE: I was correct. No conversation possible.
Ahhhh, the immature and brainless reactions of Obama haters to the SOTU speech abound on the Net today. There’s an unending flow of bile, childish name calling, ad hominem attacks and indignation over meaningless things.
I’m shopping for plans to build a moat and wall around my house to ward off the teeming hordes of the stupid. Start heating up the cauldrons of oil! Archers to the walls!
Some people WANT their leader to fail. WTF is wrong with them? That’s like being on a loaded bus and hoping it crashes and burns because you’re angry at the driver for pointing out that you were late.
After the last 8 years of death and ruin, these people decided to be upset with the new emergency cleanup crew and its chief… a team a majority of them just personally hired. The angry mob apparently expected in one year what took at least 8 years to accomplish and will take several decades to undo. Do you blame the firemen when your house is burning?
The haters don’t seem to notice they’re being played and baited for ratings, power, obstructionism, votes, artificial turmoil and profit by pundits and politicians alike.
Let’s get this straight:
Who took out loans and mortgages they shouldn’t have? Americans did.
Who carried exorbitant debts on their credit cards because they couldn’t stave off a need for immediate gratification? Americans did.
Who cheered on bloody, poorly justified wars? Americans did.
Who mismanaged bank and corporate assets? Americans did.
Who bought expensive gas guzzling cars and balked at developing economical, greener alternatives? Americans did.
Who wanted their government to give them their tax dollars back regardless of the disaster it would create? Americans did.
But who is to blame for the sorry state we’re in? THAT black guy who just walked in the room to help! Let’s get him!
Because it’s obviously someone else’s fault.
Brilliant.
1) Republicans not only want to reduce women’s access to abortion care, they’re actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven’t.
2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to “accuser.” But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain “victims.”
3) In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (Yep, for real.)
4) Republicans want to cut nearly a billion dollars of food and other aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.
5) In Congress, Republicans have proposed a bill that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.
6) Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids’ preschool program. Why? No need, they said. Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.
7) And at the federal level, Republicans want to cut that same program, Head Start, by $1 billion. That means over 200,000 kids could lose their spots in preschool.
8) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.
9) Congress will vote any day now on a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.
10) And if that wasn’t enough, Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program. (For humans. But Republican Dan Burton has a bill to provide contraception for wild horses. You can’t make this stuff up).
This is an email I got from Kat Barr, MoveOn.org Political Action.
In case you weren’t sure, yes, the Republicans have declared war on women.
If you hate your mother, your sisters, your daughters and your wife, vote GOP!
Liberals vs. Conservatives via The West Wing. BOOYAH.
Hope you don’t like your church separated from your state cause here’s Michelle Bachmann leading a convention hall in prayer.
Dear Lord, in your heavenly wisdom, may you bless these, the Republican Talking Points, lest they perish from the earth at the hands of those sinful buckwild Democrats, amen.

“I wonder if you might indulge me and join me in a little prayer. To my God. Mine. I don’t give a shit if you don’t worship my God, because like I asked, just indulge me, okay, you heathen assholes? NOW BOW YOUR FUCKING HEADS AND LET’S PRAY TO MY GOD. I mean, only if you want, we’re all Republicans here! NOW PRAY, FUCKERS.”
And please, Lord, as is fitting with an all-knowing, loving, gracious and charitable deity such as yourself, please, please smite all who are not us?
Strike them down like so many lambs that their liberal blood may flow and that we may sail our ships upon it to prosperity!
Spread freedom at gunpoint to those who would tax our corporations!
Liberate with a sword those who would have us, the affluent, depart with a mere tuppence of our gold in the name of humanitarianism!
Shine thy heavenly light down with burning strength upon the meek, teeming hordes who are not like you and I so that they may see the error of their ways for just a moment before vanishing into a pile of ash!
Suffer a thousand cuts upon the ill and disabled who would have equivalent healthcare to ours at reasonable prices!
Imprison and castrate those who would have sex without our permission or have sex differently than we want them to though we may practice similar acts ourselves!
Bring vengeance upon the teachers, unions, artists, atheists, philosophers, egalitarians, feminists, scientists, socialists and all who champion a better life for those making less than serious six-figure salaries!
Spill thy fossil fuel riches upon our oceans so that we may be coated in thy bounty!
Wipe the minds of those with dangerous thoughts and revoke their library cards. Destroy that which is not purported to be your word, oh God! Shake and tumble the very foundations of their places of learning until all know only what we want them to know!
We ask this of you, oh Lord, our great decider in the sky who favors the already privileged and devotedly selfish.
Guns and Amen.

We’ve got a real problem…this is a mathematical fact. Tens of trillions of dollars are being extracted from the United States of America. Democrats aren’t fixing it, Republicans aren’t stopping it — an entire integrated system, banking, trade and taxation, created by both parties over a period of two decades is at work decimating our entire country right now. MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan took it all on in this epic rant from his show today.
Watch this, right now.
A must watch. Pass it on.
To our great shame, among the 20 major advanced countries America now has
- the highest poverty rate, both generally and for children;
- the greatest inequality of incomes;
- the lowest government spending as a percentage of GDP on social programs for the disadvantaged;
- the lowest number of paid holiday, annual, and maternity leaves;
- the lowest score on the United Nations’ index of “material well-being of children”;
- the worst score on the United Nations’ gender inequality index;
- the lowest social mobility;
- the highest public and private expenditure on health care as a portion of GDP,
yet accompanied by
- the highest infant mortality rate;
- prevalence of mental health problems;
- obesity rate;
- portion of people going without health care due to cost;
- low-birth-weight children per capita (except for Japan);
- consumption of antidepressants per capita;
Here’s your depressing but, in the end, hopeful link of the day!
Any candidate of any persuasion that ignores these realities is a real danger to us. The frighteningly nationalistic abstraction of American exceptionalism that has come about in the last decade is ignorant of both reality and history.
Want to see us further decline into a Third World country? Then, by all means, take a stand against ending corporate tax breaks and corporate welfare, continue to assail and victimize the poor, force the middle class into poverty, commoditize basic humans needs such as clean water and health care and be completely selfish with Randian economics and a “screw everyone else, I’ve got mine” attitude.
When the United States exists “for the people” once more not for the sake of lining the pockets of bankers, corporations and politicians, then maybe some of these things will change. Otherwise, dust off your passport.

Things that many Congressmen are probably saying right now:
“Oh, yeah. I was totally for NATO action and US involvement in Libya all the way. I stood resolutely behind US actions and knew we could take down that tyrant. In fact, it was my idea. I said to the President, hey, I don’t care what you say, we’ve got to lend those guys a hand and get in there.”
And then, if Jon Stewart were on the air tomorrow night, he would roll the contradictory videotape.
